In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the team of misfit heroes—Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Baby Groot—are now a tight-knit family for hire, protecting the galaxy in exchange for rewards. After a mission goes awry and they anger a powerful alien race called the Sovereign, they find themselves pursued by fleets of enemy ships. In the midst of this chaos, Quill is approached by a mysterious figure who claims to be his long-lost father, Ego.
Ego, a celestial being who created an entire planet around himself, reveals to Peter that he is also part-celestial, giving him incredible powers. Quill, yearning to understand his heritage and form a connection with his father, initially embraces this discovery. Meanwhile, the Guardians struggle with their own issues—Gamora confronts her sister Nebula about their violent past, and Rocket wrestles with his fear of losing his newfound family. The subplot involving Yondu, Quill’s former mentor, deepens as Yondu is revealed to have a more complex and tragic backstory than initially thought.
However, as the Guardians spend more time with Ego, they uncover his true sinister intentions: Ego plans to expand his consciousness across the universe by using Peter’s celestial powers. The Guardians must band together to stop Ego from destroying all life in the galaxy. In the emotional finale, Yondu sacrifices himself to save Peter, cementing his role as Peter’s true father figure. The film ends on a bittersweet note, with the Guardians stronger than ever as a family, while still grieving their loss.
