Captain America: Civil War (2016) begins with the Avengers operating without formal oversight, leading to a mission that causes collateral damage. In response, the world’s governments draft the Sokovia Accords, a set of laws that would place the Avengers under international control. Tony Stark (Iron Man) supports the Accords, feeling responsible for the destruction caused by their actions, while Steve Rogers (Captain America) opposes them, believing that government agendas could misuse their power. This fundamental disagreement creates tension between the two heroes.
As tensions rise, former Avengers are forced to choose sides. Team Iron Man, supporting the government, includes characters like Black Widow, War Machine, and the newly introduced Black Panther and Spider-Man. On the opposing side, Team Cap includes Falcon, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Scarlet Witch. The conflict escalates, leading to an epic showdown between the two factions at an airport, which highlights both the physical and ideological rifts that have formed.
Amid the chaos, the true antagonist, Zemo, is revealed to have orchestrated the events to further divide the Avengers. His manipulation culminates in a personal revelation about the death of Tony Stark’s parents, which deepens the fracture between Iron Man and Captain America. The film ends on a somber note, with the Avengers disbanded and Steve Rogers going underground, setting up future conflicts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
